What is a tartan running track?

Tartan (also called polyurethane or all-weather track) is the standard synthetic surface used in most modern athletics facilities. It provides consistent grip and cushioning in all weather conditions, making it the surface of choice for competitive events and regular training.

What is the difference between track surfaces?

Tartan and synthetic surfaces are the most forgiving on joints and offer the best traction. Asphalt tracks are harder but durable and usually free to use. Cinder tracks are older and less common — softer feel but slower. Fine gravel is found in older facilities. If joint health matters, prioritise tartan or synthetic.

Are public tracks free to use?

Most tracks marked as 'public access' are free to use during opening hours. Some tracks belong to sports clubs or schools and are technically private — the access_type will say 'private' or 'members only'. Tracks tagged 'customers' typically belong to gyms that require a membership or day pass.

What does 'lit' mean on a track listing?

A lit track has floodlighting, making it usable after dark. This is especially valuable in winter months when daylight is short. If a track shows 'lit', it is usually accessible for evening runs — but always check the posted opening hours.

How accurate is the track data?

Track locations and details are sourced from a geographic database. Data quality varies: major athletics stadiums are usually well-documented, while smaller school tracks may have limited information. You can help by voting on accuracy below each listing, or editing the data directly on openstreetmap.org.

Are more cities coming?

Yes — we're actively adding running tracks across Europe. Tracks in France, Spain, and Belgium are on the roadmap. Data is scraped from OpenStreetMap so a new city can be added in minutes once it has enough coverage.
